The settings worth changing straight away

Four changes turn the default reading experience into a comfortable one. All of them are in the Aa menu that appears when you tap the top of a page.

Font size and typeface

The default is smaller than most people want. Go up one or two steps and read a page properly before deciding. Bookerly is the best of the built in typefaces for long reading; Amazon Ember is cleaner for non fiction and reference.

Margins and line spacing

The default margins waste a surprising amount of a seven inch screen. Setting margins to the narrowest option and line spacing one step wider fits more words on the page while making them easier to track.

In Settings, the warm light can be set to shift automatically at sunset. This is the single change most readers say they notice. Set it to follow sunset rather than a fixed time so it keeps working through the year.

Page refresh

If you see faint ghosting of the previous page, turn on page refresh so the screen fully clears on every turn. It costs a little battery and removes the artefact entirely.

Getting books onto it

  • The Kindle Store. Buy on the device or on Amazon in a browser and it appears within seconds.
